Healthy Buildings – Healthy Cities
As more people continue to live in cities globally, fostering healthy urban environments becomes essential for enhancing the quality of life for an ever-growing population. Central to this is the question: How can we design buildings and urban spaces that positively impact health wellbeing and productivity? It starts with the structures where we spend the majority of our time – homes, and work spaces. How can we create urban spaces that incentivise healthy living? How can we improve housing quality to benefit both younger and older generations alike? This seminar will explore the intersection of health, architectural integrity, and urban planning to address these crucial challenges.

BE-ST Educator Programme
The Educator Programme is a six-month agile leadership course, starting during BE-ST Fringe, aimed towards college management and educators in built environment. The course adopts a competency-based focus to support educators to reduce skills imbalances in the sector.
The programme is delivered by Built Environment-Smarter Transformation (BE-ST). BE-ST is Scotland’s Innovation Centre for construction and built environment and is already delivering programmes such as Low Carbon Learning and Passivhaus Practical to accelerate Scotland's journey towards net zero. The Educator Programme fills an exciting gap by supporting educators of the future workforce to be more agile in their competency delivery.
Course objective:
To support Educators to be more agile in their approach to teaching within the built environment and adopting a competency-based approach to education. All with the ambition to reduce skills imbalances among learners.
Through peer-to-peer learning, practical engagement with demonstrators and rigs in our Innovation Factory, and input from guest speakers, participants will by the end of the course have:
Identified their leverage as an educator to move beyond skills development into competency building.
Enhanced practical skills to deliver training in a more agile way, building a more resilient and innovation-minded future workforce
Built knowledge around different strategies to align student competency with rapid changes in the built environment.

Inclusive Cities – Creating Spaces for Everyone
We all strive to create liveable cities where people thrive, prosper, and feel included. But how do we develop cities where everyone sees their priorities recognised in the built and natural environments they call home? How can we turn this vision into reality?
The Liveable City’s opening seminar will explore the process of transforming aspirations into tangible action. Drawing from recent transformations in Danish and Scottish cities, the session will highlight how urban planners and policymakers are bridging the gap between vision and implementation. Examples of successful project proposals that have driven economic development and attracted investment will be showcased, along with strategies for drawing in landmark projects and early adopters.

Decarbonising Civic Infrastructures ( In-Person Option)
Advancing the decarbonisation of community and public buildings and estates in Scotland
Join Architype and mwclubb on the 24th of October, at the Old Assembly Hall in Leith as we come together to share insights into what enables and what holds back the decarbonisation of non-domestic buildings and local authority estates. We’re hosting this event as part of the BE-ST Fest Fringe 2024, both in-person at Old Assembly Hall and online as a webinar*
Adapting civic infrastructure for our warming world, reducing its contribution to climate change and reducing its operational costs in the face of economic uncertainty and tightening budgets is one of the greatest challenges facing Scotland today. However, evidence-driven methodologies have been developed to enable and understand cost, and early demonstrators are identifying what needs be adjusted in the funding and policy landscape to make greater things possible.
Architype's co-owners will share lessons learned developing EnerPHit Informed Retrofit Plans which offer a phased and targeted approach across local authorities' educational estates in Scotland. mwclubb will share their work championing decarbonisation and retrofit works in the north-east, developing net zero plans for Scottish rugby clubs and advocating for policy change to optimise available funds for their greatest impact.
Arrive and tune in from 17.45 for the event to begin at 18.00

Total Impact: Whole Life-Cycle Carbon
Fusing architectural and structural engineering insights into, and perspectives on Whole Life Carbon for greater collective action
Join Architype and Harley Haddow on the 3rd of October at Old Assembly Hall as we work together to broaden horizons and explore synergies around whole life carbon. We’re hosting this event as part of the BE-ST Fest Fringe 2024.
With the embodied carbon of new buildings accounting for 40-70% of their lifetime carbon impact, and the U.K. and EU construction sector being on course for blowing its 1.5C carbon budget by 2026, the immediate effects of upfront carbon, and the significance of whole life carbon over a building's lifecycle cannot be overlooked.. Architects and structural engineers design, optimise, specify and steward differing yet complementary aspects of projects and the sooner we begin accounting for carbon, the greater our possibility for positive and combined impacts.
Hear about EnerPHit Informed Retrofit Plans across Scotland, the cascading effects of the optimisation of house types, adaptive reuse, and innovative approaches to championing embodied carbon reduction.
Join us for an evening of shared learnings from Harley Haddow and Architype, panel discussions and audience participation.

Climate Action Summit 2024
As world leaders prepare to gather for COP29, the Holyrood Climate Action summit and Climate Action Awards will return to Edinburgh in October 2024 in a decisive year for the future of Scotland’s climate targets. In light of the Scottish Government’s legislative changes, the summit will ask what steps can be taken to urgently cut emissions in key polluters such as agriculture, the built environment, energy, and transport.
In response to a progress report submitted by the Climate Change Committee, the Scottish Government formally declared its 2030 targets unachievable in April 2024. An expedited policy package was subsequently announced to help Scotland achieve its 2045 Net Zero goals.
Holyrood’s Climate Action Summit will once again partner with the Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN), and Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI) to explore on–the–ground solutions and innovations for how Scotland’s public sector can decarbonise. Across two days, the themes of leadership for success and funding decarbonisation will be showcased through local case studies.
Delegates from the public sector will be joined by the private and third sectors will hear from leading voices from across the Scottish climate action space to exchange best practice and practical insights on how Scotland’s public sector can reach its decarbonisation targets.
